Tough love is what you'll get from a relationship with a Defender which was designed to be a workhouse meant to do the hard work; it'll do anything expected of it - just don't expect the ride to be (totally) comfortable.
This was were the real challenge came in - how do we give Johnny a smoother ride? This was were we decided to push the envelope to the limit with our upgrades.
Stage 2 - DRIVING (AND RIDING) COMFORT
For smoother acceleration, and to deal with Manila's notoriously stressful traffic, an Ashcroft automatic transmission system was installed in place of the stock manual system.
For a steadier ride, Super Gaz shock absorber & spring suspension kit (DA4285) - which offered a vast improvement in ride quality and damping including a firmer ride with less body roll - were fitted along with 275/65R18 Pirelli Scorpion tyres on 18" silver Sawtooth rims (DA6549) for a steadier ride while wheel spacers (DA5004) were also added not only to give Johnny a more macho stance but to address the Defender's notoriously poor turning radius.
Finally, a Momo Jet-style steering wheel (DA5727) replaced the stock unit to comfortably manage the huge tyres. The smaller steering wheel also allowed for a more comfortable driving experience. This is especially true if you're a big driver - it allows you to move freely against the tight cabin space.
Stage 3 - IF LOOKS COULD THRILL
To compliment Johnny's dark gray finish, and to give him a tough truck look, accessories with black finish such a steel bumper with LED lamps (DA5678) and a mean-looking steel grille (DA2356B) were installed with the roof and bonnet sprayed with glossy black P1 coating,* an ECO-friendly sprayable and peelable liquid protective film. Finally, to complete the makeover and give Johnny a smouldering stare (and to assist in night time driving, of course) Lynx LED headlamps (DA6283) were added.
