Alloy or steel, or both?

Wheels or rims are built from two types of materials - alloy or steel. Entry-level vehicles often come with steel wheels, sometimes fitted with plastic wheel covers to make them more attractive. On the otherhand, higher-spec models are fitted with larger, more attractive looking alloy wheels. Though the choice seems pretty clear, there are pros and cons for both types which you must consider:

Steel wheels are generally cheaper than alloy wheels and will definitely never split or crack though may bend on hard impacts. But, they can be hammered back into shape. One obvious disadvantage is that they're heavier than alloy wheels, thereby decreasing a vehicle's performance while increasing fuel consumption. They're also available in fewer styles and colours, and enhancements such as longer wheel nuts or hub caps are sometimes needed to enhance their appearance. Having said these, there's still a segment of 4x4 owners who prefer their simple, spartan, and classic finish.

Alloy wheels on the otherhand are stronger and are available in a wider range of style, finish and sizes. They're also lighter which improves the vehicle's handling and fuel consumption. Alloy wheels also conduct and dissipitate heat better than steel wheels thus improving braking performance. Unfortunately, they may crack or split from hard impacts and are often non-repairable. Lastly, for the aforementioned reasons, they are usually more expensive than steel wheels. It's a given - you've to pay extra to look good.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SET
It all boils down, then, to where you'll be driving your 4WD. Before deciding whether your steel wheels need an upgrade or whether you need to get a steel set to replace your stock alloys, ask yourself where you'll be taking your vehicle.

If you're going to take your vehicle for a drive in harsh, rugged and remote conditions, steel wheels may be an attractive proposition. Their strength (and ability to bend instead of crack) reduces the chance your being stranded in case of a hard impact.

On the other hand, if you normally drive around rural centres, you'll find alloy wheels a more attractive option. Not only are they available in a wider range of styles and sizes, they significantly improve vehicle performance and handling.

Still stumped? Not a problem, really. Why not get a set of both and install the set appropriate to your requirements for the day or weekend? Britpart Philippines' got both steel and alloy wheel selections for you to choose from.
