Side vents: More than just enhancements

A grille covers an opening in the body of a vehicle which allows air to enter. Most vehicles feature a grille up front to protect the radiator and engine. Some are located below the front bumper and are meant to cool the brakes. Some, positioned on the side, are designed to address lift and drag issues.

Though most grilles are meant to let in cooler air, side vents not only to do that, they also release unwanted ones which affect a vehicle's performance.

Side vents or fender vents, primarily, are meant to relieve pressure inside the wheel arches brought about by the accumulation of air from intake vents at the front of the vehicle meant to cool the brakes. At high speed, this accumulated pressure causes aerodynamic lift, which leads to reduced road traction. Side vents are meant to relieve this pressure thus increasing safety.

Trapped air in the wheel arches also creates aerodynamic drag thereby reducing fuel efficiency. Side vents effectively directs air in and out of the wheel arches, increasing fuel economy by reducing the drag.

Side vents also allows hot air generated by heavy braking to escape. This allows for cooler air to enter the brakes, thereby increasing their efficiency.

Check out these side vents that will not only improve any Rover's performance but enhance their looks as well.
